Mount Research Storage on macOS

Mount on macOS Using SMB

Determine Your macOS Mount Path

You should see a Storage Access section beneath each share you have access to.

macOS Mount Path

Copy the path by clicking the copy icon: Copy text icon

Use Finder to Mount

  • Open Finder
  • Click the Go menu
  • Select Connect to Server…
  • Enter the mount path you copied in the steps above into the Server Address box:
    macOS connect to server
  • Click Connect

Enter Your Unity Credentials if Prompted

You may prompted for your name and password:

  • Select the Registered User option
  • Enter your Unity ID and password:
    macOS authentication
  • Click Connect

Finder should open to the OIT Research Storage share. The mounted storage can also be found in the left part of the Finder window under SHARED.

Still can't connect?
If you are sure you entered your Unity password correctly but still cannot connect, try changing the Name: field to either of the following formats:

WOLFTECH\<Unity ID>
or
<Unity ID>@wolftech.ad.ncsu.edu

Can’t copy because there isn’t enough free space?

You may encounter this error even though there is plenty of available space in your Research Storage location:

macOS not enough free space

Why this may occur

This can occur because macOS may use the size of the Research Storage share’s parent directory when determining if there is enough space.

The top-level directory (highlighted in yellow) for each Research Storage share resides on a dedicated volume that has a minimum of 2 TB of capacity:

/rs1/researchers/[initial]/[Unity ID]
/rsstu/users/[initial]/[Unity ID]/[project name]

The parent directory (highlighted in orange) of each Research Storage share resides on a much smaller volume with only 1 GB of capacity:

/rs1/researchers/[initial]/[Unity ID]
/rsstu/users/[initial]/[Unity ID]/[project name]

How to fix it

To overcome this problem, disconnect from the storage and reconnect, making sure to include a trailing forward slash in the SMB mount path (highlighted in green):

smb://rs.oit.ncsu.edu/rs1/researchers/[initial]/[Unity ID]/
smb://oitrspprd.hpc.ncsu.edu/rsstu/users/[initial]/[Unity ID]/[project name]/
